City to get 205 new cameras

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two hundred surveillance cameras do not seem an extravagance in a city that boasts a treasure trove worth over Rs. 1 lakh crore. This is exactly what the authorities had in mind when they embarked on a mission to beef up the security surveillance system in the capital city by installing over 200 cameras in different vital locations.

�In the first phase, the city will get 12 new cameras at important locations, including the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple and the Secretariat. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will formally launch the cameras at the City Police Control Room at 4 pm on Friday.

�The security system at the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, which has till now relied on manpower, will get a boost with the introduction of� surveillance cameras in and around the temple premises. As many as six cameras are to be installed at different locations around the temple and Fort regions.

The cameras are being set up as part of tightening the security in the city, one of the priorities in the 100-day action plan of the State Government. Besides the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, six cameras will be installed at Gate no: 4 of the Secretariat and Pulimoodu junction near Statue on Friday.� It is for the first time that surveillance cameras are being introduced at Gate 4 of the Secretariat, which is used by the Ministers as well as visitors. Here, a unit of two cameras will be installed, of which one will be static.

The second one, which can rotate 360 degrees, will be controlled from the Police Control Room. Similarly, each camera unit installed at other junctions will be a combination of static and rotating cameras. �

�‘’We are planning to install an exact number of 205 surveillance cameras in the city, of which 12 will be launched on Friday,’’ said S P Gopakumar, the Project Manager of Keltron, which has developed and supplied the cameras. Even though the programme on Friday has been included in the 100-day action plan, the entire programme is, in fact, a part of a major programme called City Surveillance and Traffic Monitoring System, being implemented in Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, he said.

�Minister for Transport V S Sivakumar will also attend the inauguration on Friday.

Expert panel assesses Kerala's Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple wealth

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A five-member expert committee formed by the SC on Monday began proceedings to assess the value of the wealth in the cellars of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple. 

After a morning meeting which lasted more than an hour, the panel headed by National Museum Institute Vice Chancellor C V Ananda Bose made a preliminary examination of the temple vaults. Other members of the committee are National Museum Archeology Protection Department head M V Nair, temple executive officer V K Harikumar, Archeological Survey of India representative B V Raja and Reserve Bank of India representative Vikas Sharma. 

Bose told reporters a detailed scientific plan would be put in place to estimate the value of the wealth in the vaults. The committee steered clear of any decision on the yet-to-be-opened 'B' vault. The panel will also submit a detailed report on how to protect the wealth.

The police continued to grapple with the mysterious fire in a handicraft shop located in the Fort area which also encloses the shrine. Experts from the electricity and forensic departments inspected the area on Monday.

Cameras to assess temple wealth draw protests in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The attempt by a Supreme Court-appointed independent panel to assess the wealth discovered in the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple has run into more rough weather.

Devotees under the banner of Sree Padmanabha Bhakta Samiti have protested the use of still cameras and video equipment to make an inventory of the jewellery and other rare artefacts recovered from the temple vaults.

"Photography and videography are strictly prohibited in temples in Kerala. The Lord's ornaments cannot be treated as mere material goods," a spokesman of the newly-formed group pointed out.

The samiti also alleged there was an attempt by certain vested interests to tinker with the beliefs and customs of the temple.

The Samiti also submitted a memorandum to the Ananda Bose Committee entrusted with the task of assessing the temple treasures.

"The faithful believe that there are priceless treasures inside the cellars of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple, and that these were given as donations to the Lord. The devotees have never expressed a desire to see them. Publishing their details would create unnecessary chaos inside the temple and vitiate the atmosphere," the memorandum said.

A seven member committee appointed by the Supreme Court has begun the inventory process of precious articles stored inside the six chambers of the temple. On Monday the committee members held a discussion and decided to open the four chambers from C to F during the next four days.
However, the real mystery lies concealed within the A and B chambers which haven't been opened for centuries, but the public will have to wait for a few more days to know what is inside the secret chambers. On Friday the committee would meet once again to decide how to go ahead with the work in the two chambers.
Hundreds of armed police were deployed around the 16th-century temple and metal detectors were set up at the entrance after the first reports of the treasure were leaked Saturday.

State officials said the treasure has an estimated preliminary worth of over $11.2 billion.
